MAVA Monthly Member Spotlight: Josh Windam

Josh Windham is Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities’ Volunteer Services Manager.  In this role Josh oversees the recruitment, retention and recognition of over 4,000 annual volunteers.  Josh also helps with in-kind donations and group volunteer engagement for corporations, schools and churches.  Prior to working at the Union Gospel Mission, he worked at Little Brothers-Friends of the Elderly in south Minneapolis, helping to match volunteers with lonely and isolated older adults.  His passion is to bring people in our community to a deeper understanding of issues like social justice, homelessness and poverty.

Windam learned about MAVA and membership through UGM. He attended the Volunteer Impact Leadership Training Series and connected with volunteer managers like himself. MAVA helped him grow professionally by creating and building a robust volunteer program. For example, Windam recruits volunteers through multiple channels such as HandsOn Twin Cities and local churches, and uses a skills-based approach when matching volunteers with UGM position and needs. He retains his volunteers by providing orientations and assessing whether volunteers are satisfied in the roles, and by helping them grow. Last, Windam recognizes his volunteers whether it’s sending a handwritten note or UGM’s annual volunteer recognition dinner.

“MAVA has been HUGE in my growth as a Volunteer Manager. It’s provided structure and policies in this profession, and connected me with other volunteer professionals facing similar challenges and opportunities. I know everyone has busy lives, but try and be a part of something with MAVA. Committing to three to four MAVA events a year will greatly benefit your personal and professional development.”

If you are interested in learning more about UGM, MAVA, and the membership benefits reach out to Josh.
