Addressing Privilege And Inclusion In Volunteer Programs

Join us for a day of training at the Northwest Area Foundation in St. Paul on September 25! Morning and afternoon refreshments will be provided. Lunch is on your own. Register for one or both of the following workshops:

9:30 - 11:30 AM - Bridging the Gap between Privilege and Poverty
Led by Danielle Brady, Volunteer Services Manager at Greater Mpls. Crisis Nursery

Does your organization work with people experiencing poverty? Danielle has been working with volunteers for over 20 years and with children and families experiencing poverty for even longer. As a Volunteer Engagement Professional, she has thoroughly enjoyed providing training on trauma informed care, poverty and cultural sensitivity for staff, volunteers and the community. In her career in volunteer engagement, she has found that both the biggest challenge and the greatest reward comes in bridging the gap between those that want to help and those that need the help by facilitating understanding between volunteers and the vulnerable people they serve. It is her passion to help prepare volunteers to achieve maximum impact. In this hands on interactive training you will walk away with tools to help volunteers not only face their own privilege but also experience a small taste of what the most vulnerable in our community face every day. Danielle strongly believes we are only one story away from understanding one another.

1:00 - 3:00 PM - Engaging Volunteers from Racially and Ethnically Diverse Communities: 8 Strategies for Creating a More Inclusive Volunteer Program
Facilitated by Lisa Joyslin, Inclusive Volunteerism Program Manager at MAVA

Many organizations struggle to engage volunteers who reflect the racial and ethnic diversity of the communities they serve. In response to this issue, MAVA recently embarked on a research study which resulted in a set of eight strategies for creating a more inclusive volunteer program within nonprofit and government organizations. These strategies serve as a starting point for volunteer engagement leaders who are seeking concrete next steps for better engaging volunteers from diverse and immigrant communities. Join MAVA for an interactive session in which you'll learn about the eight strategies, share your own experiences and create an action plan for launching a more inclusive volunteer program within your own organization.
