Mary Quirk 
Volunteer Resources Leadership Project Manager

Mary Quirk is the manager of MAVA's statewide initiatives to increase training and resources for leaders of volunteers. In this position Mary led the development of a system for delivery of best practices information that has reached over 1,000 leaders of volunteers in all regions of Minnesota and manages MAVA's new initiative to prepare organizations to engage Boomers as volunteers and on volunteerism in immigrant and refugee communities. Previously, Mary was the Director of Southeast Seniors, A Living at Home/Block Nurse Program and Little Brothers -- Friends of the Elderly. She has a master's degree from the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs and a master's degree from the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. She has had articles on volunteer resources leadership and nonprofit management published in Nonprofit World, e-Volunteerism, and Fieldstone Alliance Tools You Can Use.

Katie Bull
Member Services Associate

Katie is the Member Services Associate at MAVA. She is the one who keeps MAVA running every day, answering your phone calls and emails! Prior to MAVA, Katie served as an AmeriCorps VISTA at CommonBond Communities and as a VISTA Leader at the Minnesota Literacy Council. Katie earned her BA in English from the University of Minnesota. She has volunteered as an English teacher in the U.S. and Africa and received her Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language from Hamline University. In her free time, Katie enjoys photography, reading, and spending time with her cat. She recently played "Aunt Eller" in the North St. Paul Community Ed Production of Oklahoma!

Helen Young
AmeriCorps VISTA Member Outreach Coordinator

Helen Young is an AmeriCorps VISTA, serving as the Member Outreach Coordinator at MAVA's state headquarters. Helen received her BA in Public History and Geography from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in December of 2008. While in school, she completed several internships, including work with the City of Eau Claire's Planning & Community Development Office, Downtown Eau Claire, Incorporated, and spent 3 months working at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington. After graduating, she worked for Friends of the Fox, Inc., helping to develop an environmental study that was submitted to U.S. Congress and served as the basis for legislation. In her year as a VISTA, Helen hopes to dive into all aspects of MAVA. She is excited to assist with the development of this emerging and influential organization! In her free time, Helen enjoys long road-trips, being outdoors and watching the Green Bay Packer's play every Sunday!

Kristi Kehrwald
AmeriCorps VISTA Community Initiatives Coordinator

Kristi Kehrwald is  an AmeriCorps VISTA, serving as the Community Initiatives Coordinator in Rochester. Kristi completed her first year of AmeriCorps with the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) in July 2009. During the year, her team worked on disaster relief, environmental work and construction projects in a number of areas, including several (very hot!) Gulf States. Prior to NCCC, Kristi graduated from the University of Minnesota in Morris, with majors in Political Science and International Studies. Through college, and work with a number of different organizational through an internship with the American Friends Service Committee and a year of service with NCCC, Kristi has gained a great interest in volunteerism and community engagement. As a Community Initiatives Coordinator with MAVA and the United Way of Olmsted County, Kristi has the opportunity to work with volunteer organizers in southern Minnesota, and also be a part of the Community Impact team with the United Way in Rochester. Kristi is looking forward to learning more about Rochester and Southern Minnesota in the upcoming year, and hopes to explore the bike trails in the area before the snow starts flying!

Mary Jane Horton
AmeriCorps VISTA Outreach Coordinator

Mary Jane Horton began her service as an AmeriCorps VISTA at the end of November and will be serving as the Outreach Coordinator for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in Carver County. Besides working to connect agencies in the area with volunteers who will help to bridge gaps in services, she will also be working with MAVA to reach out to volunteer managers in Carver County and the rest of the Metro area. She graduated with a degree in Social Work and Sociology from Gordon College on the North Shore of Boston, where she had the opportunity to develop her passion for working with children and adults affected by HIV/AIDS, both in the states and abroad in South Africa. She hopes to develop her passion for public health through her exposure to the 55+ population this year, and is excited for the opportunity to help maintain a healthy outlook on aging for both the partnering agencies and the individual volunteers. In her spare time she enjoys anything that involves good music, good coffee, and good people who are always ready to squish into a car and pitch a tent during a roadtrip.
