While there has been extensive research into the  'Baby Boomer'  generation and how they wish to be contributing, there is little concrete information about how volunteer leaders within organizations can be catalysts for changes internally to successfully connect with these potential volunteers, and recruit, retain and engage them in meaningful roles.

MAVA will address this by:

  • Holding two symposiums for leaders of volunteers to build the base of hands-on knowledge for engaging and retaining Boomers as volunteers.
  • Turning the information from the symposiums into a curriculum for training of leaders of volunteers statewide.

MAVA aims to:

  • Train a minimum of 350 leaders of volunteers in how to best engage the “baby boomer” generation of volunteers.
  • Reach an additional 500 nonprofit leaders with tips to improve their capacity to use the “baby boomer” generation of volunteers through newsletters, electronic communication and written materials.

MAVA will be working with the Vital Aging Network and the Invisible Force Collaborative and other partners in this endeavor.  A task force, under the leadership of Terry Straub, will conduct the symposiums and develop the curriculum.  Members include:

  • Terry Straub, (Chair) University of Minnesota Extension -- Hennepin County Master Gardeners
  • Colleen Fritsch, DARTS
  • Gayle Alexander, Anoka County Community Resources & Volunteer Services Unit
  • Israa Khan, Greater Twin Cities United Way
  • Jackie Connolly, Hennepin County Volunteer & Community Partnership Program
